What to Expect During & After Your Appointment

Before You Arrive

  • Remove your jewelry

  • Fast for 4 hours

Check In

  • Provide the front desk with your ID

  • Share Dr. Nancy Chu's contact information with them to receive your scans

Dressing Room & Waiting Room

  • After checking in, you'll be escorted to a 1-stall private dressing room.

    • Note: these rooms are shared, so be sure to use the locker to securely store your things.

  • Undress fully except for your underwear and socks, and put on the provided scrubs and feet covers.

    • For people with breasts, a bra will be provided. They prefer that you wear it to ensure the breasts are in the right place for the scan.

    • If you need a different size, the staff can help accommodate your request.

  • Remove all jewelry, glasses, watches, etc and store in the locker with your things.

  • Lock your locker using a 4-digit password (instructions are listed in the dressing room)

  • Exit the dressing room and await your scan in the waiting area. There is an informational video that you can watch while you wait.

  • Be sure to use the restroom before your scan, too, if you need it.

Entering the Scan

  • Let the staff know what you'd like to watch on Netflix or listen to on Spotify

    • NOTE: For watching Netflix, if you are nearsighted, wear contacts if possible. The TV is visible through a mirror above your face, and will not be clear without glasses.

  • You will be instructed to lie down on the MRI machine

  • The staff will strap you in, and provide supports under your knees. The staff will help you move your body into position as they place equipment over your legs and chest. These feel like weighted blankets.

  • The staff will put headphones on you, and a cage is placed over your face, which includes a mirror to see the TV behind the MRI machine.

  • Be sure to confirm with the staff that you are comfortable. Now's the right time to ask for small adjustments!

During the Scan

  • The staff will guide you through each step of the scan, so if you forget everything in this section that's no problem 😊

  • The machine makes loud noise, similar in volume to a blender. The sounds are rhythmic, not unlike the bass of electronic music. Your headphones will muddle much of the sound, and you can still hear your Netflix or Spotify over the noise.

  • You can expect each portion of the scan to take approximately:

    • 10 minutes for head and brain

    • 15 minutes for chest (instructed breathing) â€‹â€‹

    • 25 minutes for rest of body

  • During the chest scan you will be instructed to breathe in, breathe out, and hold your breath for up to 20 seconds at a time. You will hear instructions in your headphones telling you when to do this.

After the Scan

  • Redress in the dressing room. Leave the used scrubs behind.

  • Be sure to grab all your items from the locker.

  • Feel free to grab a refreshment/snack from the waiting area before you leave.

  • Stop by the front desk to check out.

    • A radiologist will write a report in about 5-12 business days. A nurse practitioner will go over it with you at that time.

    • If you'd like Dr. Chu's private radiologist to review your scans, contact us to discuss the process and additional fee.

    • Prenuvo will automatically book your next scan within 1-3 years based on the radiologist's findings (with no payment/charge). They will contact you 3 months before the appointment to confirm, reschedule, or cancel the scan.

  • Refuel and grab a bite to eat if you're hungry (there are many tasty options in the area).
